Meet Your Neighbor: Denise Wright

A note from the Editor
If you don’t know Denise Wright, you may be new around these parts. Denise has touched so many lives through her years of teaching elementary and special needs children in the Amanda Clearcreek Local School District. Post-retirement she has been sewing, quilting and teaching those skills to many people. She was a favorite instructor at Rabbit & Rocket, teaching couples quilting, scrunchie sewing and more. Artful and kind, with a tenacious giving streak, Denise is a person so many call friend. The Lancaster community is so fortunate to have her. Here is her story…

This will be my 14th year riding in a wonderful fundraising opportunity, Pelotonia.

I have ridden several different routes over the years, 50, 45, 25 and 20 miles.  I always ride for my mother who lost her life to liver cancer in 1985 at the age of 56.  Each year I dedicate my ride to friends who have cancer.

This year I ride for Debbie B. and Barb C., both wonderful quilters. To date I’ve raised over $47,000.

Pelotonia is a bicycle ride that raises funds for cancer research at The James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute.  In its 15 years, Pelotonia cyclists and volunteers have raised over $260 million.

100% is used for cancer research.  Over 8,000 cyclists will hit the roads in central Ohio on August 5 and 6 all with One Goal, End Cancer.

The last several years I’ve been making appliqué tea towels and other items that I sell at Keller Market. All profits from my sales are donated to my Pelotonia. My business name is Sewing in my Basement.

This summer, I’ll be at the 4H Craft Show on July 29 at the Fairfield County Fairgrounds and at the Sims Fall Festival on September 22nd and 23rd in Amanda.

Thanks to all who have purchased items and donated to my ride over the years and thank you for reading my story.
