Lancaster Band of Gold Prepares for Disney World Performance

The Lancaster High School Band of Gold is headed to Walt Disney World, after receiving a superior rating at the 2023 Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) State Marching Band Finals. The band will be traveling to Orlando, Florida over the holiday break to perform at the Magic Kingdom.

“We are very excited to be headed to Disney again this year,” said Director of Bands Benjamin Factor. “This is the Band of Gold’s 13th time performing at Disney World.”

The Band of Gold completed its competitive marching season on November 4 with its performance at the OMEA State Marching Band Finals earning the top rating of Superior.

Performing at State Marching Band Finals is reserved for bands who qualify at a local contest by earning an overall rating of Superior at one of these events. The Band of Gold earned this top rating at all four local contests it entered in 2023. This included the Pickerington Band Festival, the Marietta Band O Rama, the Licking Valley Band Fest, and the Lancaster Band of Gold Invitational.

“The Band of Gold has a rich history of success in marching band competitions,” said Factor. “The State Marching Band Finals began in 1980. Lancaster’s first performance was in 1981 and the Lancaster High School Marching Band has qualified and performed each year thereafter. 2023 marked the 42nd consecutive performance for the Band of Gold. Only a few bands in the state can claim this level of consistency.”

In those 42 appearances, the Band of Gold has received the top “Superior” rating 26 times.

In addition to its performance at contests, the Band of Gold plays at each Lancaster home football game in the fall and is active in the community by marching in all four community parades throughout the year.

Lancaster City Schools Instrumental Music Department
Inspiring our community through music since 1921, the Lancaster Band program gives students from elementary school through high school the opportunity to learn about and experience music and performance. The program dates back to September 17, 1921, when a group of twenty-five Lancaster High School students formed a marching band to perform at the Lancaster-Logan football game. Since that time, the band program has been an integral part of our school and community. The goal of the Lancaster band program is to prepare students for life-long participation in music. To accomplish this goal, great emphasis is placed on understanding and appreciating quality music, developing a great work ethic, becoming independent musicians, and strengthening leadership skills. The Lancaster band program has a prominent and irreplaceable role in our city. Throughout the year, the band gives back to our community by performing at parades, athletic games, and community events.
