Going Up! The Elevator Project begins at the Tecumseh Theater in Shawnee, Ohio

ODNR Director to Visit Historic Tecumseh Theater in Shawnee, Ohio, Marking the Commencement of Renovations Backed by AMLER

The historic Tecumseh Theater in Shawnee, Ohio is set to undergo renovations supported by the federal Abandoned Mine Land Economic Revitalization Act administered by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Saved from demolition in 1976 by a group of young community volunteers led by resident Skip Ricketts, the theater has stood as a symbol of community resilience ever since with improvements and steady use of its completed first floor space, the Tecumseh Commons.

On March 28th, at 1:00 pm, at The Tecumseh Theater located at 114 W. Main, the public is invited to join in honoring the individuals and organizations whose contributions have been instrumental in preserving the Theater’s legacy and enabling its ongoing revitalization. Light refreshments will be served.

Currently, the Abandoned Mine Land Economic Revitalization has provided the first half of the Theater’s renovation, including an elevator column and expansive windows. Mary Mertz, Director of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), will be present in Shawnee for this event.

The Sunday Creek Board aims to expand community programming through various events such as day-camps, shows, graduations, weddings, monthly live Chauatauquas and story-telling sessions, expos, and gatherings.

A guided hike to Tecumseh Lake led by the Buckeye Trail will follow the event. The same AMLER grant to SCA will also assist the Buckeye Trail Association to rebuild the hiking trail from Stone Church Hollow Horseback Campgrounds outside of Shawnee through Shawnee to Tecumseh Lake and onto Burr Oak State Park over the next several years.
